What is a Dutch oven and do I really need one?

Question by Princess C: What is a Dutch oven and do I really need one?
I have several soup recipes that say to cook the soup in a Dutch oven. What is a Dutch oven? Is it like a Crock-Pot or is it something else? Do I really need to cook my soup recipes in one, or can I just use a saucepan, and if so, how would I need to tweak the cooking times?

Best answer:

Answer by salt and peppy
It’s basically a big sauce pan. They are like 4 1/2, or 6 Qts, or bigger sometimes. They have high sides so you can cook soups and stews.

6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Cut chicken breast into 1 inch strips.
Heat a large non-stick skillet that has been sprayed with Pam, over medium-high heat.
Cook chicken strips for about 6 minutes until no longer pink.
Mix together honey, soy sauce, water, corn starch, ginger and red pepper flakes.
Whisk until no corn starch lumps appear.
Pour sauce mixture into skillet with chicken.
Cook until sauce thickens slightly.
You can add more water if sauce is too thick.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until chicken starts to soak up the sauce.

How does food get freezdried?

Question by ineeshee: How does food get freezdried?
I was watching this thing on the food network the other night and it was talking about how food is freezdried but it didnt go to in depth. The part im confused about is how to they get the water vapor out of the food without heating the food up?

Best answer:

Answer by kingznwarriorsfan19
They suck all the air out of the food container so it is vacuum packed.

When food is exposed to any kind of particles (or the fod radiates any kind of particles harmful to itself), the food will go bad b4 you buy it. So, by sucking out all the air from the food container, there are no air particles to spoil the food.

How should I go about making a cookbook?

Question by andy♥bean: How should I go about making a cookbook?
I’m really interested in putting together a cookbook – but I can’t afford to self publish. I’ve looked into it, and it goes to be about 30 dollars, plus like 15 dollars S&H to Canada.

Does anybody have any other ideas? I’d be really appreciative of anything anyone could offer.

I have one that I enjoy. It’s called “Healthy Cooking for Two (or just you)” by Frances Price, R.D. I like it not only because the recipes are actually easy and tasty but also because the ingredients list is broken down for 2 servings or 4 servings.

Does a restaurant’s ambiance contribute to a customer’s judgment of the food served?

Question by Lexi: Does a restaurant’s ambiance contribute to a customer’s judgment of the food served?
Experiments have been conducted regarding the overall effect of a restaurant’s presentation (cleanliness, service, appearances of dining area, etc.) on a typical customer’s resulting opinion of the food, all being driven from “first impression.”
Though a common bias from those interviewed by Food Network, I want to hear from you. Comment on any past experiences that you might have enjoyed a tasty meal, in spite of the unpleasant eating area or service, or visa versa.

Does anyone know a recipe to 49′er Flapjacks, the kind you find at the Original Pancake House?

Answer by “Mouse Potato”
Hi !!!
Hope this is what you are looking for…

Forty-Niner Flapjacks

Ingredients:
2 cups sour milk (regular milk can be used)
1 cup cornmeal
2 tablespoons flour
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
Water as needed

Directions:
This is a very old recipe from the California Gold Rush days. These flapjacks were very popular in the gold camps.

1. Mix the milk, cornmeal, flour and egg together.
2. Add the baking soda and salt, then mix. Add a little water if needed (if it looks too dry).
3. Drop dough (like pancakes) onto a greased skillet (medium heat).
4. When bubbles appear and the bottom of the flapjacks are browned, turn and cook until the other side is brown. Turn only once!

On top of these flapjacks they served syrup, honey, jam or whatever was available.

TOP SECRET RECIPES‘ VERSION OF ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE APPLE PANCAKE

2 medium Granny Smith apples
3 tablespoons butter (salted)
1/2 cup light brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 eggs
1/3 cup whole milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Peel and quarter two apples. Cut the core from each of the quarters, then slice the quarters into 4 to 5 slices each. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a 9- or 10-inch skillet. (If you’ve got a skillet that isn’t nonstick, such as cast-iron, that’s the best kind for this recipe, although any oven-safe skillet this size will still work.) Add brown sugar, cinnamon and the sliced apples and saute for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off the heat and let the pan sit for one hour so that the apples and glaze will stick to the bottom when the batter is poured on top.

Preheat oven to 475 degrees.

In a medium bowl, beat eggs with an electric mixer. Mix in milk, cream, sugar, salt and vanilla. Mix until sugar is dissolved. Sift in flour and mix until smooth. Let batter rest for about 10 minutes.

After the apples have cooled for an hour, pour the batter over the apples and pop the whole thing into the oven for 16 to 18 minutes or until the top begins to brown. Remove it from the oven, cool for one minute, and then use a spatula to loosen the pancake around the edges. Put a plate on top of the pan and invert the pan and plate together so that the pancake comes out upside-down on the plate. Serve with an optional dusting of powdered sugar over the top.

Note: You can substitute 2/3 cup half-and-half for the 1/3 cup heavy cream and 1/3 cup whole milk, but using the cream and milk separately makes for a fluffier texture and better clone.

Makes 1 large pancake.
